What are inodes and why am I hitting the inode limit? Print

An inode is simply one file or folder on your account - every single file, email, and cache item counts as one inode. The inode limit caps how many total files you can store, separate from disk space, so you can hit it even with space to spare.

Common causes of high inode usage:

  • Thousands of cached files, thumbnails, or session files
  • Large email mailboxes (each message is an inode)
  • Old backups and log files

To reduce inodes:

  1. Open Disk Usage in cPanel to find folders with many files.
  2. Delete old backups, clear cache folders, and empty Trash.
  3. Remove or archive old emails and empty spam/trash mailboxes.

Check your plan's inode allowance in your client area. If you are still over after cleanup, open a ticket.
