Back up as often as your content changes, so you never lose more than you can comfortably recreate:
- Active sites (blogs, stores, forums): daily, or before every batch of changes.
- Occasionally updated sites: weekly is usually fine.
- Static or rarely changed sites: monthly, plus before any edit.
Always take a fresh backup before updates, plugin or theme changes, migrations, or editing the database. Keep at least one copy off the server (your PC or cloud storage), and occasionally test that a backup actually restores.
